How do I define segments?

The first step in creating an asset mask is to define the necessary segments. You need to determine what kind of information to include in the asset mask. For example, Jane wants to include in her asset mask an account number, department code, location code, and four-digit year. She will create a segment that represents each block of information. She creates four segments: (A) Account, (D) Department, (G) Group, (L) Location, and (Y) Year.

Defining segments

1. Open Connect Asset Management > Organization > Organization > Asset Format tab.

2. Click Add a New Segment.

3. Now, assign a Segment Code, Title, and Digits.

The segment code is a letter (A-Z). The title is a brief description of the segment. The digits indicates the segment length (1-9).

For example, Jane needs to include a five-digit account number in her Asset Mask. She sets up a segment where the Segment Code is A, the Title is Account, and Digits is 5. When Jane checks the Asset Mask field she finds AAAAA.

4. Do you have all of the segments that you need to create the Asset Mask?

  • Yes, I have all of the segments. Continue to the next section to set up the Asset Mask.

  • No, I need to define more segments. Repeat steps 2-4 to add another segment.
