How do I set up net metering?

Set up Net Energy Metering (NEM) for utility customers.

Net Energy Metering (NEM) is for utility customers who generate some or all of their own electricity to receive an energy credit for the energy that is not used when it is generated. For example, alternative energy sources such as wind and solar. Setting up net metering in Connect allows you to apply an energy credit to a utility customer's outstanding balance.

Webinar: Setting up and using net metering

Storing net energy credit

Net metering is a meter that can run backwards to record power generated by an alternate energy source. When a property uses an alternate energy source to generate power and the property can't use all of the generated power, the property can add the power to the utility grid.

Do this...

1. Open Connect Utility Management > Organization > Organization.

2. Find the section titled Net Metering.

3. Click to select the Store Credit Usage checkbox.

4. Set up the checkbox titled Apply Credit Usage When Creating Billings.

To apply the net energy metering credit to the customer's utility balance, click to select the checkbox. To accrue the net energy metering credit without applying it, clear the checkmark from the checkbox.

5. Click Save (CTRL+S).

Net metering is set up and saved. All of the credit usage options and features in Utility Management are available to use.

Applying credit usage when creating billings

When you import meter readings, enter meter readings manually, calculate metered amounts and usage, or any routine that will calculate a billed amount, you can choose to apply the net metering credit to the customer's utility balance.

Do this...

1. Open Connect Utility Management > Organization > Organization.

2. Find the section titled Net Metering.

3. Select the checkbox titled Apply Credit Usage When Creating Billings.

4. Click Save (CTRL+S).

Utility Management will apply the net energy credit to the customer's utility balance when you run a routine that calculates an amount.

The usage will record what the customer actually uses while Connect records the energy they return to the grid as production.

Do this...

1. Open Connect Utility Management > Meters > Modify Existing Meters.

2. Look up a meter.

3. Use the Multiplier field to enter a net energy multiplier.

4. Click Save (CTRL+S).

The meter will record net energy.

Applying credit usage

Apply credit usage from a net energy meter to a customer's utility balance. You can run this routine once a month or once a year depending on the requirements of your organization. Usually, net energy credit is applied or forfeited each year. You do not need to apply the usage at the same rate the usage was billed. In some instances, the retail billing rate is different from the rate you pay them for that usage.

Do this...

1. Open Connect Utility Management > Meters > Apply/Forfeit Credit Usage.

2. Select Apply Usage as the Action.
