Error: Medicare calculation error

Issue

An employee has an amount deducted for Medicare that does not match the system calculated amount by more than $1. 

 

Explanation

The Medicare amount deducted for the employee should match the amount calculated. If the amounts don't match, the difference should be less than $1. If the difference is greater than $1, there may be an issue with the employee pay code setting or it could be a calculation error. 

 

Solution

To fix this error, review the employee pay code for Medicare. (Modify Existing Employees > Pay Codes tab) 

  • Does the employee have an employee pay code for Medicare?

  • Is the employee pay code for Medicare set up correctly? Is it active?

  • Does the employee pay code for Medicare have a zero amount/rate/percent type?  

 

If the employee pay code for Medicare is set up correctly, check the employee's hours. 

  • Are the employee hours correct for the pay period?

  • Was an amount that is not subject to Medicare subject to Medicare?

  • Did the employee report tips?
