How do I override salary with an hourly amount?

In some circumstances, you may need to pay a salaried employee an hourly amount. In version 2021.11 or later, you can enter an hourly amount when you're entering a paycheck for a salaried employee. If this option is not available, download and install version 2021.11.

You would typically override a salaried amount with an hourly amount when a particular payroll run needs to pay the employee based on actual hours rather than their normal salary calculation.

Common situations include:
  1. Partial pay periods – The employee started, terminated, or changed positions during the pay period and should only be paid for hours actually worked.
  2. Leave without pay – The employee is salaried but had unpaid leave, so you need to reduce pay based on hours missed.
  3. Docked pay – A salaried employee did not work their full schedule and the organization's policy requires an hourly-based adjustment.
  4. Temporary pay adjustments – The employee is filling in for another role, working a different schedule, or receiving a one-time hourly calculation for that payroll.
  5. Manual corrections – You need to correct a prior payroll error by paying a specific number of hours at a specific rate.
  6. Final paychecks – A final check may require payment for actual hours worked rather than the standard salary amount.

The override does not usually change the employee's underlying salary setup; it affects the pay calculation for that payroll entry or payroll run so that earnings are calculated from the hourly rate and hours entered instead of the normal salaried amount.
